Removing acetone stains from wood

Removing acetone stains from wood

A drop of nail polish remover or pure acetone on the table seems harmless, but it can cause a white or dull stain within seconds. Acetone doesn't just dissolve nail polish, but also the varnish layer of wooden surfaces. With the right approach you can sometimes limit the damage or restore the surface, depending on how deep the stain goes.

Why acetone causes damage

Acetone is a strong solvent, often used in nail polish remover. As soon as it comes into contact with wood, it attacks the protective varnish layer. This causes a matte haze, a white stain or, in serious cases, a spot where the shine has completely disappeared. On untreated wood acetone rarely penetrates deeply, but on lacquered or varnished tables the damage is often visible immediately.

acetone stains caused by nail polish remover

What to do right away

Act fast as soon as acetone or nail polish remover gets on wood.

  1. Gently blot the liquid with a clean, dry cloth.
  2. Don't rub the stain. That way you stop the solvent from spreading further.
  3. Let the acetone evaporate completely before you touch anything or try to clean it.

Note: If the wood is still wet, polishing or sanding can actually make the problem worse.

Repairing light acetone stains

With superficial damage, you can sometimes restore the wood's shine without sanding.

  • Use a little furniture oil or beeswax. Apply it with a soft cloth and rub gently in the direction of the wood grain. The oil fills small irregularities and makes the varnish layer look more even.
  • Let the product soak in well. Then buff with a dry cloth until the surface looks even again.

This works especially well on matte or oil-finished tables. On high-gloss lacquered surfaces the effect is limited, because the lacquer itself is already damaged.

Deep or permanent stains

Is the white haze still visible after oiling or polishing? Then the varnish layer has partly dissolved and needs to be restored.

  • Lightly sand the spot with fine sandpaper (400–600 grit). Always rub with the wood grain. For the best result, treat the whole tabletop again so the entire surface looks the same.
  • Apply a new coat of furniture varnish or parquet oil with a clean cloth or brush.
  • Let it dry well and, if needed, touch up the edge of the repaired spot with extra oil to reduce colour differences.

For large or noticeable spots, it's wiser to call in a furniture maker or wood professional. They can level the surface completely without the repair remaining visible.

What you'd better not do

  • Don't use alcohol, methylated spirits or other solvents. They dissolve the varnish layer further.
  • Don't use cleaning products containing ammonia or bleach. They can make discolouration worse.
  • Don't start sanding wet wood straight away. Moisture draws dirt and solvent deeper into the wood.

Acetone stains on clothing or textiles

Spilled some while cleaning or painting your nails? Rinse the fabric with cold water immediately and then use a spot cleaner. This device sucks the liquid and chemical residue out of the fabric without affecting the colour. That way you prevent permanent damage to clothing or upholstery.

Preventing acetone stains

An acetone stain is tricky to repair, so prevention is always better. These tips may feel a bit too late, but we'd still like to share them with you.

  • Always use a coaster or placemat when removing nail polish.
  • Don't work above untreated wood.
  • Preferably choose an acetone-free nail polish remover.
  • Always test new products on an inconspicuous piece of wood first.

Frequently asked questions about acetone stains
