Removing yellow stains from your mattress
Spotted yellow stains on your mattress? That's usually a sign that moisture or dirt has built up. Fortunately, you can often still remove even old, yellowed spots well, as long as you know where they come from and how to tackle them.
And that's exactly what we can help you with.
Possible causes of yellow stains
Yellow stains are usually caused by sweat, urine or a build-up of moisture. While you sleep, you lose moisture through perspiration every night. It soaks into the mattress fabric and over time the salts and oils from sweat leave behind a yellow haze. For removing sweat stains from your mattress, we've created a separate guide.
Small accidents with urine can also cause yellowing, especially if the moisture stays in the mattress for too long. In some cases it's due to house dust mites, mould or age, especially with mattresses that can't dry properly. If you want to get urine stains out of your mattress, Achaté can help with that too.
What you need
- Lukewarm water
- Natural vinegar
- Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
- A clean cloth or sponge
- Optionally a steam or hot-water cleaner
A steam cleaner or spot cleaner can help loosen old yellow stains from the deeper layers of the mattress. The heat kills bacteria and breaks down old salt residue without damaging the material. Our devices work a lot more effectively and efficiently than home-remedy solutions.
How to remove old yellow stains from your mattress
1. Clean the surface
Mix lukewarm water with a splash of natural vinegar. Gently blot the stain with a cloth or sponge. The vinegar helps dissolve the salts and oils that cause the yellow colour.
2. Sprinkle baking soda over the damp spot
Leave it for a few hours, ideally half a day. Soda draws moisture out of the mattress and neutralises odours.
3. Vacuum up the baking soda
Use an upholstery nozzle or the suction function of a spot cleaner to remove the powder.
4. Treat stubborn stains with steam or hot water
For old or dark yellow stains, you can use a steam cleaner. The steam helps loosen deeply dried-in dirt. A compact model such as the Achaté Spot Cleaner PRO is well suited for this.
5. Let it dry thoroughly
Stand the mattress upright near an open window or use a fan. Make sure it's completely dry before you make the bed again.
Tackling stubborn yellowing
With mattresses older than five years, yellowing may be partly permanent. Repeat the vinegar and baking soda treatment a few times a year to keep it fresh. Want to visibly freshen up your mattress and remove all stains from your mattress? A light steam treatment with hot water removes salt and grease residue and makes the fabric look brighter again.
Preventing yellow stains
- Always use a mattress pad or protector that blocks moisture.
- Air the mattress regularly, especially in warm or humid weather. Without the duvet.
- Clean the mattress every six months with a light steam treatment.
- Avoid sleeping without a fitted sheet: cotton absorbs a lot of sweat and prevents discolouration.
