Why "quickly hiding the stains" never works, and what actually made the difference for me.

The job everyone skips

I haven't invited people over for years.

Not because I don't want to see them. But because I'm ashamed of my home.

When visitors came, I knew the ritual. Flip the cushions. A rug over the stain. A quick wipe of the worktop, bathroom door shut. Twenty minutes of panic, then the whole evening hoping nobody looked at the floor for too long.

I did clean. Every week. With sprays, sponges, vinegar and lots of scrubbing.
